The Chr. Michelsen prize for outstanding development research aims to promote and inspire development related research of high quality and relevance.
The price of NOK 50 000 is awarded biannually by the fond «Nationalgaven til Chr. Michelsen» (the National gift to Chr. Michelsen), which was a gift from the Norwegian people to Christian Michelsen when he resigned as Prime Minister in 1907. The prize was first awarded in 2014.
The prize is awarded to a researcher below 40 years of age for an outstanding peer reviewed article.
Anyone can nominate a candidate for the Chr. Michelsen Prize, including institutions and the candidate him/her/themselves. It is possible to nominate more than one candidate.

Nominations are made to the Board of “Nationalgaven til Christian Michelsen”.

Who can be nominated
Candidates who have:
- published articles in peer-review scientific outlets during the last two calendar years before the Prize is awarded.
- are residents in Norway and/or Norwegian citizens.
- are under 40 years of age at the end of the calendar year before the Prize is awarded.
- have contributed substantially to all aspects of the article. In the case of co-authorship, an author declaration from the co-authors is required.
THE PRIZE COMMITTEE
The Prize committee has four members appointed by the Board of the foundation “Nationalgaven til Christian Michelsen”. At least three of the committee members must have scientific competence, and at least one must have experience from development cooperation.
In case the committee does not have competence to assess the nominated articles, inputs should be sought from others with relevant expertise.
Before an article is evaluated, the committee members should declare their impartiality. Standard rules about impartiality in evaluation committees apply.
The evaluation of any article should be made by at least three impartial committee members. The remaining committee members should appoint substitutes as needed.
MEMBERS
EVALUATION
In the evaluation, emphasis is placed on both scientific quality and relevance. Quality is assessed according to standard scientific criteria. Relevance is assessed in relation to the work’s contribution to understanding and/or solving the specific social, economic, and environmental challenges faced by low- and middle-income countries.
The Prize committee presents a written justification of its decision to the Board. In case there are co-authors who do not qualify for the Prize, their contributions should also be acknowledged by the committee.
In case of co-authorship, the Prize is shared equally between those authors who qualify for the Prize.
PREVIOUS WINNERS
- Aida Cuni-Sanchez received the prize in 2022 for the article ‘High aboveground carbon stock of African tropical montane forests’ published in Nature August 2021.
- Vincent Somville received the prize in 2020 for the article “Saving by default: Evidence from a field-experiment in rural India”, which he co-authored with Lore Vandewalle.
- Maja Janmyr received the prize in 2018 for the article “No Country of Asylum: ‘Legitimizing’ Lebanon’s Rejection of the 1951 Refugee Convention”, published in International Journal of Refugee Law (2017).
- Francesca R. Jensenius received the prize in 2016 for the article “Development from Representation? A Study of Quotas for the Scheduled Castes in India”, published in American Economic Journal: Applied Economics in 2015.
- Carl Henrik Knutsen received the prize in 2014 for the article “Democracy, State Capacity and Economic Growth” published in World Development in 2012.

Chr. Michelsens pris for fremragende utviklingsforskning skal synliggjøre og inspirere til utviklingsrelatert forskning av høy kvalitet og relevans.
Prisen er på 50 000 kroner og tildeles annethvert år av Fondet «Nationalgaven til Chr. Michelsen», som er det norske folks gave til Chr. Michelsen ved hans avgang som statsminister i 1907. Prisen ble tildelt første gang i 2014.
Prisen tildeles forskere under 40 år for fremragende vitenskapelig artikkel innen utviklingsrelaterte studier. Arbeidet bedømmes etter vitenskapelig kvalitet og relevans.
Enhver har rett til å nominere, inkludert institusjoner og kandidaten selv. Det er mulig å nominere mer enn én kandidat.

HVEM KAN NOMINERES
Kandidater som:
- har publisert artikler i fagfellevurderte vitenskapelige tidsskrift i løpet av de to siste kalenderårene før prisen deles ut.
- er bosatt i Norge og/eller er norske statsborgere.
- er under 40 år ved slutten av kalenderåret før prisen deles ut.
- har bidratt vesentlig til alle aspekter av artikkelen. Ved medforfatterskap kreves en forfattererklæring fra medforfatterne
PRISKOMITEEN
Priskomiteen har fire medlemmer oppnevnt av styret i stiftelsen “Nationalgaven til Christian Michelsen”. Minst tre av komiteens medlemmer må ha vitenskapelig kompetanse, og minst ett må ha erfaring fra utviklingssamarbeid.
Hvis utvalget ikke har kompetanse til å vurdere de nominerte artiklene, bør det søkes innspill fra andre med relevant kompetanse.
Før en artikkel evalueres, må komitémedlemmene erklære sin upartiskhet. Standardregler om upartiskhet i evalueringskomiteer gjelder.
Evalueringen av en artikkel bør gjøres av minst tre upartiske komitémedlemmer. De resterende komitémedlemmene utpeker andre til å evaluere ved behov.
MEDLEMMER
EVALUERING
I evalueringen legges det vekt på både vitenskapelig kvalitet og relevans. Kvalitet vurderes i henhold til vitenskapelige standardkriterier. Relevansen vurderes i forhold til arbeidets bidrag til å forstå og/eller løse de spesifikke sosiale, økonomiske og miljømessige utfordringene lav- og mellominntektsland står overfor.
Priskomiteen presenterer en skriftlig begrunnelse for sin beslutning for styret. I tilfelle det er medforfattere som ikke kvalifiserer til prisen, bør komiteen også anerkjenne deres bidrag.
Ved medforfatterskap deles prisen likt mellom de forfatterne som kvalifiserer til prisen.
